The invention relates to improvement of a rail transit technology, in particular to an intelligent monitoring and defect positioning system and method for a long-distance steel rail, which improve the accuracy of an existing detection system, can accurately measure a rail damage point and improve the positioning precision of a broken rail. The system comprises an ultrasonic guided wave sending module, an ultrasonic guided wave receiving module, a communication module and a terminal, the ultrasonic guided wave sending module comprises an ARM control chip, an MOS drive circuit, a full-bridge circuit, a pulse transformer and an ultrasonic sensor; and the ARM control chip is connected with the MOS driving circuit, the full-bridge circuit comprises power MOS tubes Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4, the MOS driving circuit is respectively connected to grid electrodes of the power MOS tubes Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4, drain electrodes of the power MOS tubes Q1 and Q3 are connected with a power supply VCC, source electrodes of the power MOS tubes Q2 and Q4 are connected with a digital ground GND, and a source electrode of the power MOS tube Q1 and a drain electrode of the power MOS tube Q2 are respectively connected with one end of a primary side coil of the pulse transformer.
