Computing devices, systems, and methods described in various embodiments herein may involve light detection and ranging (LIDAR or lidar) systems. An example computing device may include a controller having at least one processor and at least one memory. The at least one processor is configured to execute the program instructions stored in the at least one memory to perform operations. Operations include receiving information indicative of transmitted light emitted along a light emission axis from a light detection and ranging system. The operations further include determining a maximum meter distance based on the received information. The maximum meter distance includes a known barrier-free area defined by a segment of light extending between the light detection and ranging system and a point along the light emission axis.
