According to the invention, it is provided that the steering of the driver does not cause direct lateral acceleration as in the current situation, but acts as an input medium for the vehicle (40) with respect to the driver's intention, and then lateral acceleration, in particular a turning process or a lane change, will be introduced. As a result of the signals from the actuating elements (34, 36), a safe, travelable trajectory is calculated, which trajectory is thus automatically followed by the vehicle (40). This may also include a more complex driving maneuver, such as a change in multiple lanes. Thus, driving becomes more comfortable and safer.
