The invention provides an escalator abnormity detection device and an escalator abnormity detection method, which are not easy to be influenced by external interference and can detect abnormity of a step roller and a step chain at low cost and high precision. According to the embodiment, the first distance sensor and the second distance sensor are correspondingly arranged at the left and right parts of the step rollers which are arranged at the left and right parts by taking the step as the center. The first distance sensor and the second distance sensor measure the distance from the first distance sensor and the second distance sensor to the rotating shaft of the step roller. The abnormality determination part determines whether there is an abnormality in the step roller based on whether distance signals output from the first and second distance sensors are within a normal range, and determines whether there is an abnormality in the step roller when the travel speed of the escalator detected by the speed detection part is greater than a certain speed. Whether the step chain is abnormal or not is judged on the basis of the time difference until the first distance sensor and the second distance sensor detect the rotating shaft of the step roller.
