The invention relates to a method for detecting insulation faults (RF, RF) in a vehicle electrical system (FB) having an HV electrical system branch (HB) and an LV electrical system branch (LB). The LV on-board electrical system branch (LV) has at least one LV potential (1-5) and a second LV potential (L-) which differs therefrom and which corresponds to a ground potential (M) of the on-board electrical system of the vehicle. The HV on-board electrical system branch (HB) has a positive HV potential (HV +) and a negative HV potential (HV-). These HV potentials are electrically isolated from the potential of the LV on-board electrical network branch (LB). An insulation fault (RF, RF) between at least one of the HV potentials (HV +, HV-) and the first LV potential (1-5) is detected by identifying the through current (I, I). This passing current passes through a voltage limiting circuit (SG) connected between a ground potential (M) and a first LV potential (1-5). This circuit connects the first LV potential (1-5) via a plurality of diodes D to a voltage limiting element (V, V), which is connected to the ground potential (GND) of the vehicle electrical system. The invention further relates to a vehicle overvoltage protection circuit (SG) having a plurality of diode half-bridges (HB) which connect the LV potential to the voltage limiting elements (V, V) to the ground potential (GND). The diode half-bridge (HB) guides an overvoltage and leads this overvoltage to a ground potential via a voltage limiting element.
