The invention relates to a method and system for monitoring a steering wheel holding posture of a driver. The method comprises the steps that S1, an image of the hand posture of the driver in a steering wheel rim area is collected; s2, if the hands of the driver leave the steering wheel and the time for continuously leaving the steering wheel exceeds a first preset time, giving an alarm; s3, if other parts except the hands of the driver are in contact with the steering wheel and the continuous contact time of the steering wheel exceeds a second preset time, giving an alarm; s4, collecting an intensity change value of a capacitance signal on the steering wheel; and S5, if the intensity change value of the capacitance signal on the steering wheel does not exceed the preset threshold value and the duration of the intensity change value does not exceed the preset threshold value exceeds a third preset time, giving an alarm and continuing to execute S4, otherwise, returning to S1. According to the invention, the accuracy and reliability of monitoring are improved, the driving risk is reduced, the driving safety performance is improved, and the requirement of automatic driving technology is met.
