A vessel has a retractable lift-propulsion system that includes a mast connected to a buoyancy body of the vessel and movable between a retracted position and a deployed position. The distance between the distal end of the mast and the lower surface of the buoyancy body is greater in the deployed position than in the retracted position. The lift-propulsion assembly comprises a hydrofoil for providing lift to the vessel at least in the deployed position of the mast and a propulsion unit for providing thrust to the vessel in the retracted and deployed positions of the mast. The lift-propulsion assembly is connected to the distal end of the mast such that in the deployed position of the mast, the lift-propulsion assembly is remote from the buoyancy body of the vessel and in the retracted position of the mast, the lift-propulsion assembly is close to the buoyancy body of the vessel.
