Systems (100) and methods (800) for detecting and measuring rail and/or track defects may include an array of time-of-flight distance measurement sensors (120S) (120SA) that measures a distance to a rail head (226); wherein the distance measurement sensors (120S) are synchronized and the dimensional data therefrom are geotagged. A memory (144, 146, 174) stores geotagged distance measurement data. The distance measurement data is processed (800) to determine dimensional data of the rail head (226) including at least its width and height for detecting rail wear and rail defects. Rail wear, surface defects, rail structural defects, rail fractures and cracks, and/or gaps in the rail may be measured and detected.
