The invention relates to a sensor cleaning device (3) for cleaning an external sensor surface (4) of a sensor (2), in particular an optical camera or lidar, used in automotive applications, comprising: a dispensing device (6); -a dispensing device (6) having a cleaning liquid dispensing unit (7) for dispensing a cleaning liquid (8) towards the outer sensor surface (4) of the sensor (2),-a collecting unit (12) for collecting the cleaning liquid (8) dispensed from the dispensing device (6) towards the outer sensor surface (4), wherein-the dispensing device (6) comprises a receiving fluid connector (9) for receiving the cleaning liquid (8), and-the collecting unit (12) comprises at least one return fluid connector (17) for releasing the collected cleaning liquid (8). The sensor cleaning device (3) is characterized in that the collecting unit (12) comprises a movable cover element (13) which can be moved between a protruding position, in which the movable cover element (13) is inserted into the collecting unit (12), and a retracted position, in which the movable cover element (13) is inserted into the collecting unit (12). The collection unit (12) collects via its collection opening (15) a maximum amount of cleaning liquid (8) dispensed from the dispensing device (6) towards the outer sensor surface (4) of the sensor (2), and a retracted position in which the cover element (13) is retracted into a position outside the field of view of the sensor (2). The invention also discloses a sensor unit (1) comprising a sensor (2), in particular an optical camera or lidar, for use in automotive applications and the above sensor cleaning device (3).
