The present disclosure provides a traction battery controller that provides fast and accurate state of charge conditions. A traction battery controller of an electrically powered vehicle dynamically selects an estimated gain based on operating conditions of the vehicle and controls the vehicle according to a state (e.g., state of charge (SOC)) of the traction battery estimated from an equivalent circuit model of the traction battery, the state of the traction battery depending on the estimated gain. Operating conditions of the vehicle may indicate on-board energy (OBE) or power demand of the vehicle. In operation, the controller (i) selects the estimated gain as a high estimated gain during a first operating condition of the vehicle, thereby estimating the battery state at an increased speed but with a lower accuracy than a nominal estimated gain, and (ii) selects the estimated gain as a low estimated gain during a second operating condition of the vehicle, thereby estimating the battery state at an increased speed but with a lower accuracy than the nominal estimated gain. The battery state is estimated with higher accuracy but at a reduced speed.
