The invention relates to a method for operating a battery system (10), comprising a plurality of battery packs (2, 2a, 2b) which are connected in parallel to one another and each have a battery control unit (6, 6a, 6b) for controlling and monitoring the corresponding battery pack (2, 2a, 2b) and a switching unit (8, 8a, 8b) for switching the corresponding battery pack (2, 2a, 2b) on and off, wherein the switching units (8, 8a, 8b) each implement a plurality of switching states of the corresponding battery pack (2, 2a, 2b), said switching states each being numbered with a state number. The method comprises the following steps: selecting one of the battery control units (6, 6a, 6b) as a master battery control unit, while the other battery control units (6, 6a, 6b) are each referred to as slave battery control units; -determining the number N of available battery packs (2, 2a, 2b); transmitting status information of the respective battery pack (2, 2a, 2b) to the main battery control unit; -calculating, for each combination of the switching states of the battery packs (2, 2a, 2b), an equalizing current flowing between the battery packs (2, 2a, 2b) in the case of a respective combination, on the basis of the state information and a model for the battery system (10) consisting of battery models (20, 20a, 20b) of the respective battery packs (2, 2a, 2b); calculating a charging current limit and a discharging current limit of the battery system (10) for each combination of the switching states of the battery packs (2, 2a, 2b) on the basis of the state information and the battery models (20, 20a, 20b) of the respective battery packs (2, 2a, 2b); recording in an N-dimensional matrix for all possible combinations of the switching states of the battery packs (2, 2a, 2b): in the respective combination, under all boundary conditions, whether the equalizing current lies in the charging and discharging directions for all battery packs (2, 2a, 2b) within the range of the charging and discharging current limits of the battery packs (2, 2a, 2b); -rejecting a combination of the switching states of the battery pack (2, 2a, 2b) in at least one battery pack (2, 2a, 2b) that results in a breakthrough of the charging and/or discharging current limits and thus invalidation; -searching a combination of the switching states of the battery packs (2, 2a, 2b) for the maximum power or maximum energy utilization of the battery system (10) from effective combinations from the N-dimensional matrix.
