High voltage (HV) electrical systems that pair solid state relays (SSRs) with electromechanical contactors in order to optimize current disconnections, methods for making/using such systems, and vehicles equipped with such systems are presented. The HV electrical system includes a first circuit loop that connects a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) to an electrified powertrain. A second circuit loop in parallel with the first circuit loop connects the RESS to a charging inlet of the battery charging system. A first contactor switch on the first circuit loop is connected in series with an electric motor of the powertrain and a first terminal of the RESS battery assembly. A second contactor switch on the second circuit loop is connected in series with the charging inlet and the first terminal. The one or more SSR switches are electrically connected in series with the second terminal of the battery assembly, the electric motor, and/or the charging inlet, and are electrically connected in series with the two contactor switches across the battery assembly.
