The invention relates to a method and a system for operating a steering-by-wire of a motor vehicle, and to a steering-by-wire, comprising a steering rod, a slip-free rotational/translational transmission and an electric motor by means of which the steering rod is moved, and also comprising an electronic control unit for controlling the electric motor, and an electric motor having an energy supply, a storage element, a main controller device and a rotor position sensor, the electric motor having a cogging torque which prevents the steering lever from moving when the electric motor is stopped, when the main controller device is in a shutdown state, the rotor position sensor detects a rotor position as a previous rotor position when it recognizes a point in time at which the electric motor stops operating and transmits it to the storage element for storage and thereby determines a previous spindle position. And when the main controller device is restarted, the main shaft position determined by the stored previous rotor position is used as a reinitialization value in order to determine the current position of the steering rod, and the main shaft position is transmitted to the position adjustment subsequently started by the main controller device.
