The invention relates to methods, devices and systems for controlling fluid density in the vicinity of a functional object in order to improve one or more related performance metrics. In certain embodiments, the invention relates to forming a low density region near the object by utilizing a directional energy deposition device to deposit energy along one or more paths in the fluid. In certain embodiments, the invention relates to synchronizing energy deposition with one or more parameters that affect the functional performance of the object.
