Architecture and techniques disclosed herein are used to significantly improve the operation of an unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV). For example, UUVs may have modular interfaces that may be configured to interchangeably connect different types of sensors to facilitate different UUV applications to interchangeably connect different types of clamping devices that may be configured for different types or sizes of subsea pipelines. The UUV may also include a mother ship interface that may be used to exchange information and supply fluid to the clamping device. The UUV may include a PID controller that may be used to autonomously navigate to a target location of the subsea pipeline and to autonomously couple to the subsea pipeline via the gripping device.
