A vehicular safety system employing an adaptive epidemic information dissemination protocol running on a wireless ad-hoc network composed by neighbouring vehicles (305, 306) and roadside stations (301). The protocol is based on collaborative storage and retransmission of messages by on-board units in vehicles; both storage time and retransmission period are adaptively adjusted in order to make information spread through the network reasonably certain. An on-board system (120) of each vehicle monitors amongst other parameters a vehicle's speed and acceleration in order to detect collisions or any other situation that might endanger road users or compromise the safety of driver and passengers; when such an event is detected a short time-stamped message that optionally identifies the vehicle and that contains its approximate location and the type of event is transmitted. A panic button is included to trigger an emergency message in case of situations that represent an immediate threat to the physical integrity of driver and passengers. Roadside stations (301) add their location to the messages they relay, making satellite or map-based positioning technologies unnecessary; they also receive messages transmitted from passing vehicles (305, 306), relaying them to law-enforcement agencies. Roadside stations (301) can also broadcast messages aimed at locating and safely disabling stolen vehicles.
