To provide an obstacle detection system for a guide-way traveling vehicle and an obstacle detection method in which an object crossing the guide-way can appropriately be judged as an obstacle. An obstacle on the guide-way is detected based on a signal from a first detector which is mounted on a vehicle traveling on the guide-way and creates a first side boundary detection range for detecting an object entering the guide-way from a right side and a signal from a second detector which is mounted on the vehicle and creates a second side boundary range for detecting an object entering the guide-way from a left side. Alternatively, in front of a vehicle traveling on the guide-way, a first side boundary detection range for detecting an object entering the guide-way from a right side and a second side boundary detection range for detecting an object entering the guide-way from a left side are formed. When the object is detected in one of the first side boundary detection range and the second side boundary detection range, it is judged that the obstacle has entered the guide-way.
