The invention relates to a plug (1) of a charging cable used as an authentication interface for authenticating an electric vehicle as a result of a reading device (3) of the plug (1) reading an identifier of the vehicle from a memory (4) next to a socket (2) on the vehicle. A way of conveniently charging vehicles which, for example due to their age, have only a simple charging sequence control system and do not comply with ISO 15118 is thus created, such that the vehicle can be authenticated when the charging plug is plugged in without the need to manually input billing details for this purpose. The authentication is independent of the vehicle manufacturer or dealer. It is therefore also possible to repeatedly update the authentication data - for example in the form of prepaid tariffs for which a credit RFID tag is attached to the vehicle.
