The invention relates to a method for testing ETCS Level 2 functionalities in rail traffic. An on-board unit (OBU) is provided in a rail vehicle (SZF) as a first assembly (BG1) with which the movement of the rail vehicle is monitored. In accordance with the ETCS Level 2 functionality, the first assembly has (BG1) a terminal (AS) for a GSM-R radio connection. An adapter (ADP) is provided in the rail vehicle as a second assembly (BG2). The adapter (ADP) is connected to the terminal (AS) of the first assembly (BG1) by means of a data transfer line (DL1) such that a GSM-R radio connection is simulated for the first assembly (BG1). The adapter (ADP) is connected by means of a data transfer line (DL2) to a computer (RE) as a third assembly (BG3). The computer (RE) is arranged in the rail vehicle (SFZ) and contains a software with which, in accordance with the ETCS Level 2 functionality, a radio block centre (RBC) of a signal box is simulated for testing purposes.
