The invention relates to a method for identifying the driver of a vehicle using characteristic or state variables of the vehicle. In a training phase, for one or more drivers that form a reference pool, characteristic or state variables that are individual to each driver are determined during a journey and, from a classification model containing training sequences of the characteristic or state variables, driver-individual classification parameters of the classification model are determined. In a subsequent classification phase, during a journey driver-individual characteristic or state variables are determined and a plurality of subsequences of the characteristic or state variables are supplied to the classification model and a match probability of the subsequence matching the training sequence is determined, wherein the match probabilities of a plurality of subsequences are combined to form an overall probability, by means of which the present driver from the reference pool is identified.
