An assembly is provided for a rotorcraft (20). This rotorcraft (20) assembly includes a fuselage (30), a tail boom (32), an air system (26) and a cooling system (28). The tail boom (32) projects longitudinally along a centerline (38) out from the fuselage (30). The air system (26) includes an air flowpath (84). The air flowpath (84) passes from the fuselage (30) into the tail boom (32) and extends longitudinally within the tail boom (32). The cooling system (28) includes a first heat exchanger (134) and a coolant flowpath (130) extending through the first heat exchanger (134). The first heat exchanger (134) is arranged with the tail boom (32). The first heat exchanger (134) is configured to transfer heat energy between system air flowing in the air flowpath (84) and coolant flowing in the coolant flowpath (130).
