A system 100 suitable for stabilising a child seat 101 in a vehicle. The system 100 has a seat-supporting platform 105 that can be adjusted in at least one plane by actuators 106, such as brushless motors. Sensors (111a, 111b, Fig. 1), such as an accelerometer and capacitance and proximity sensors, provide data indicative of real-time motion of the vehicle to a control unit (107, Fig. 1), which uses this data to operate the actuators 106 to stabilise the position of the seat-supporting platform 105. Also disclosed is a method of operating the system 100. A calibrating unit (112, Fig. 1) can be used to determine a centre of gravity of the seat 101 based on the weight and size of the occupant, and the control unit (107, Fig. 1) subsequently uses the determined centre of gravity, in combination with the real-time data, to stabilise the child seat 101.
