Apparatus comprising a fifth wheel H and a permanent magnet generator C are provided for charging a battery unit M of an electric or hybrid vehicle having a motor O. The wheel H is rotated by movement of the vehicle. Rotational movement is transmitted to the generator via pulleys and a belt. The apparatus includes steel frame members A,B. The vehicle has four load bearing road wheels Q,R,S,T. The generator C is attached to the undercarriage of the vehicle with rubber bushes and shock absorbers to ensure a smooth drive. The charge which is returned to the battery can be amended by weight, cogging, and grip of the wheel and resistance of the magnet for efficiency and to suit the variety of batteries on any electric and hybrid vehicle. The invention is aimed at facilitating range extension.
