A reinforcing element 30 is provided in the region between the floor structure and hinge pillar 14 of a motor vehicle. A first end portion 31 is structurally connected to the floor structure 4, preferably within the wheel housing 10, and a second end portion (32, fig. 6), located opposite the first, is structurally connected to a superstructure (5, fig. 2), preferably at the outside edge of one of the hinge pillar 14, side wall 18 or front end of a sill 16. The first end portion 31 may be connected to a reinforcing plate 24 or torque box (26, fig. 4). The element 30 may act to minimise the impact of the front wheel on the passenger compartment in the event of a collision and to strengthen the connections between said substructure and floor structure portions.
