A linked crank 230 for use with a switch rail 300 is mounted on a device 100 which is rigidly attached relative to standard rails 330 of railway points. The mounting device comprises an input terminal (190, Fig.1) for receiving input power; an output connector 160 which is mechanically linked to a switch rail or an output connector of another such mounting device; and an actuator (130-150, Fig.1) which applies the input power to the output connector and which comprises a rack and pinion. The power is preferably electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic. A series of such linked cranks may rotate such that the switch rail is properly positioned. Powering the linked cranks may reduce load on an associated points machine; e.g. the power may apply a torque to the linked cranks to reduce the torque required from the points machine to actuate the linked cranks.
