The invention relates to a method of restraining an occupant during a collision, the method comprising receiving a side impact single representing a collision the side 34 of a vehicle 30, receiving an occupancy signal indicating the presence of a person. Using both these signals to determine whether to deploy an airbag between a front seat adjacent the side of the vehicle and a second rear seat adjacent said side of vehicle, only if the second rear seat is unoccupied. The same airbag may be deployed once a front impact signal is received, only when a person occupies a corresponding seat. The airbag may also extend away from the front seat a different distance depending on which impact signal is received. A controller (32, see fig. 3) for a vehicle includes a processor and a memory storing processor-executable instructions for performing aforementioned method.
