A vehicle communication interface communicate with multiple platooning vehicles and receives sensor signals transmitted from a rear vehicle; commands the rear vehicle to turn around; and outputs control signals to the platooning vehicles to travel in a reverse direction according to the sensor signals received from the rear vehicle. The sensor signals may be from forward-facing ultrasound, LIDAR or RADAR sensors or a camera of the rear vehicle, which may be more sophisticated than its rear-facing sensors. Alternatively control of the platoon may be transferred to the rear vehicle during reversing.
