A method is provided of determining and responding to a sunlight load on a fuel tank area of a vehicle 12. The method comprises determining the position of the vehicle 12, determining the relative position of the sun and identifying areas of shade such as a tree shadow 116 within a predetermined range of the vehicle 12. One of the shaded areas is selected as a target area and the vehicle 12 is directed to the target area upon determining that, based on the relative position of the sun (106 see fig 4), that a fuel temperature threshold will be exceeded. This may be performed autonomously via a pilot system (18 see fig 2). The vehicle 12 typically includes a vapour canister (24 see fig 1) and a fuel tank (22 see fig 1). Prevention of overheating enables the amount of evaporative gases to remain within an absorption capacity.
