A vehicle mounted shelter 10 can be deployed from a stowed configuration to a deployed configuration. The shelter 10 has a first stage 13 which is mounted adjacent the vehicle roof 1 and is deployed to provide a first sheltered zone adjacent the vehicle; and a second stage 14 carried by the first stage 13 and which is movable relative to the first stage 13 to provide a second sheltered zone adjacent to the first sheltered zone. The first stage 13 may be arranged to slide from runners 12 on the vehicle roof 1 during deployment. When in the stowed position, the second stage 14 may be located in a recess provided by the first stage 13. The sliding direction of the second stage 13 may be transverse to the sliding direction of the first stage 14. A ground engaging support structure provided with legs 16 may support the first stage 13.
