A hose monitoring system for an inflight refuelling system comprising a hose deployment system for deploying and retracting a hose 4 in and out of an aircraft, an observation system including sensing device(s) 51a, 51b, 51c observing the hose as it passes between the hose deployment system and aircraft exterior. Preferably, a plurality of sensing devices is radially distributed around the hose for visual assessment of the hose condition (e.g. hose wear, damage, deterioration) from different directions. The sensors may comprise thermal infra-red, ultraviolet, hyperspectral or optical visible light cameras, radar, x-ray or ultrasound inspection sensors. Alternatively, sensors may monitor eddy currents induced in the hose for observing its structure. Different type sensors may observe the same hose portion and a signal processor may combine data from the sensor pair to produce hybrid data. Image recognition software, mirrors and illumination may be used. Hose video footage may be recorded.
