A method of and system for providing diagnostics communication in a diagnostics electrical architecture of a vehicle, hosted by on-board computing devices. The architecture comprises electronic control units (ECUs) 211 each comprising a diagnostics server or module 212; a service interface module 221, 231 providing diagnostic communication between the ECUs and a network service bus of the vehicle; and a diagnostic services registry module 222, 232. The diagnostics server modules of the ECUs perform diagnostic tasks to generate diagnostic object data, which is received by the service interface module. The service interface module retrieves diagnostic services data from the diagnostic service registry module, the diagnostic services data comprising diagnostic capability descriptions of the diagnostic object data; and transmits a diagnostic service notification over the network bus, the diagnostic service notification being based on the diagnostic object data and the diagnostic services data. The stored diagnostic services data can be an ODX file to interpret diagnostic object data. The service interface module can be deployed as communication middleware via SOME/IP (Scalable service-oriented middleware over IP), REST (Representational state transfer), or DDS (Data distribution service). The invention provides service-oriented diagnostics, with diagnostic tasks being offered as services across the vehicle service bus.
