Red light runner signal module 11 and transmitter 12 are connected to and synchronized with traffic light 1. They generate and transmit a signal (RL RS - Tx) comprising a fixed bit-length data binary sequence containing multiple fields (Fig.2). A colour field, time-to-colour counter field and traffic light ID field respectively contain values indicating the current colour, countdown time to the next colour change and unique identifier of the traffic light. A continuous field contains information suitable for relative localisation of a receiver of the signal (e.g. vehicle 13 or pedestrian (2,Fig.4)). Specifically, it may contain a constant binary value such that the signal amplitude during the corresponding period of the signal cycle is constant. Thus, when a vehicle receives signals from multiple traffic lights, it can identify the signal with the highest power, as measured during transmission of the continuous field, and thus use the signal from the closest traffic light. The binary sequence may be modulated using different modulation techniques for simultaneous transmission in different environments (e.g. sonic, light, radio).
