PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator capable of minutely controlling a slip between a winch and a rope even in an elevator car reduced in weight and consequently more shortening a brake distance of the elevator car, and further to provide an elevator braking method.SOLUTION: An elevator comprises: an elevator car; a weight; a rope for hoisting the elevator car and the weight; a winch for winching up the rope; a hoistway through which the elevator car is lifted up and down; a winch speed measurement section for detecting a speed of the winch; a speed measurement device for detecting a speed of the elevator car; and a controller for reducing braking torque of the winch when determining a slip between the winch and the rope to occur on the basis of outputs of the winch speed measurement section and the speed measurement device.
