PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for compacting shaped composite stiffeners, such as stringers, to consistently and predictably distribute ply wrinkles and high density region of a ply so as to improves part quality and/or performance.SOLUTION: This invention relates to a core material 30 for formation, used for forming contoured elongate composite structure, wherein: the first section 32 has flexibility within a first plane 44 along its length and further has a second section 34 connected to the first section 32, the second section 34 having flexibility within a second plate 46 along its length; and the first section and second section are substantially orthogonal to each other. A method includes using the core material 30 to place a stiffener laminate on the surface of the core material 30, and to then push and compact the stiffener laminate.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
