PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detector and a detection method with which it is possible to prevent an increase in signal processing load and detect the position of a crosswalk in a short time.SOLUTION: A detector 10 comprises: a position estimation unit 102 for estimating a candidate position for a crosswalk in a direction of vehicle travel on the basis of the output data of an azimuth-distance sensor 100, and estimating the length of the crosswalk and an intersection angle of the crosswalk and a roadway using the candidate position; a correction unit 105 for correcting the frequency and width of two basis functions orthogonal to each other that indicate the intervals of white lines of the crosswalk on the basis of the estimated length of the crosswalk and the estimated intersection angle; and a crosswalk detection unit 106 for detecting the presence of a crosswalk using image data that includes the candidate position and the corrected two basis functions.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
