To provide an operating method for a fuel cell system that can suppress a purge valve from being frozen, and the fuel cell system.SOLUTION: An operation method for a fuel cell system 10 which comprises a fuel cell stack 12, a fuel gas supply passage 40, a circulation passage 45, a purge valve 46a, and a temperature sensor 84, and is mounted on a vehicle 11 includes: a determination process of determining whether a temperature detected by the temperature sensor 84 drops to a predetermined temperature or lower in a state in which the vehicle is stopped from being driven by turning off the ignition of the vehicle; and a purge valve exhaustion processing process of intermittently opening and closing the purge valve 46a a plurality of times while supplying fuel gas through the fuel gas supply passage 40 in the driving stop state if the temperature drops to the predetermined temperature or lower.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
