To provide an estimation method for railway vehicles that can estimate a friction state between a wheel and a rail on an outer rail side, regardless of the friction state on the inner rail side.SOLUTION: An estimation method for a railway vehicle includes: a measurement step of acquiring detection data from each of a tangential force detector, a lateral pressure detector, and a wheel load detector when the railway vehicle travels on a curved railway, and measuring a tangential force Ti, a lateral pressure Qi, and a wheel load Pi acting on a wheel (3i) on an inner rail side of the curved railway; a derivation step of deriving a lateral pressure wheel load ratio κi expressed by Qi/Pi and a tangential force lateral pressure ratio Yi expressed by Ti/Qi from the tangential force Ti, the lateral pressure Qi, and the wheel load Pi; and an estimation step of estimating a friction state between a wheel (3o) and a rail (5o) on an outer rail side of the curved railway based on the lateral pressure wheel load ratio κi and the tangential force lateral pressure ratio Yi.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1C
