To improve fuel efficiency while keeping costs low in the case of operating connected electric railcars that are also capable of operation on a single-car basis.SOLUTION: An electric railcar 10 includes an engine unit 103, an electric generator 104, a converter device 105, an auxiliary power supply 107, an inverter device 108, a propulsion motor 109 and an integral control unit 102. The integral control uni 102 stops the engine unit 103 of some electric railcars 10 of a plurality electric rail cars constituting a composition when it is possible to output acceleration and deceleration torques necessary for the composition as a whole even if the engine units 103 of some electric railcars 10 are stopped.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
