An electromechanical brake system including an actuator of an electromechanical brake that operates by a motor, according to an aspect of the disclosure, includes: a motor driver configured to drive the motor; and a controller electrically connected to the motor driver, wherein the controller is configured to calculate a differential value of a control parameter for controlling the motor with respect to time while moving a brake pad of the electromechanical brake forward, compare the calculated differential value to a preset reference value to detect occurrence of a contact between the brake pad and a brake disc of the electromechanical brake, store a contact position at which the contact between the brake pad and the brake disc has occurred, and set an origin position by storing a position moved backward by a preset gap distance from the contact position.
