This paper explores the effects of different route selection mechanisms utilized by both human-driven vehicles (HVs) and autonomous vehicles (AVs) on the traffic flow in road networks with physical queues. Specifically, we examine the fixed path (FP) and user-optimal (UO) mechanism used by HVs, and the UO and system-optimal (SO) mechanism used by AVs, resulting in three possible route selection combinations (FP and UO; FP and SO; UO and SO). This study illustrates the changing process of traffic flow under three route selection combinations to reveal the influence of both bottleneck capacity and AV penetration on queue spillovers and the efficiency of the traffic system. It is proved that: i) Network spillovers are irrelevant to path selection mechanisms when the traffic demand is either too small or too large. ii) If HV follows FP while AV follows UO. increasing bottleneck capacity may lead to overflow unless the expanded bottleneck capacity can meet total demand. iii) When AV follows SO, given the AV penetration rate exceeding a certain value, the network cannot overflow regardless of the route selection mechanism for HV. In contrast, with a low AV penetration rate, the network cannot avoid overflow if HV uses FP, but this can be mitigated by increasing bottleneck capacity. Nevertheless, in the case of HV following UO, increasing bottleneck capacity may instead cause the network to overflow.
