Recently there is increased interest in a system that would automatically track all aircraft in flight, or certainly large aircraft, continuously with complete global coverage. But, normal air traffic management, ATM, procedures perform that function. The proposed systems would track aircraft without crew interaction at a higher update rate than current ATM protocol allows. Another advantage of the proposed systems is to provide tracking when the crew, for whatever reason, cannot provide position information or chooses not to; the latter suggesting sabotage of an aircraft. The most likely system to evolve from recent activities is based on the reception of Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, ADS-B, transmissions from aircraft by satellites.
