Protecting low-altitude space against unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats has become imperative due to the proliferation of small or micro UAVs. The complex and dynamic environments in low-altitude aerial space, especially in urban areas, make UAV detection extremely challenging. What add to the difficulty are unknown models and sophisticated operations of invading UAVs. This paper responds to this challenge with a UAV detection system based on distributed radio frequency (RF) signal analysis. The main innovations of this paper include a suite of novel RF learning and passive RF sensing algorithms for detecting (1) wirelessly controlled UAVs and (2) autonomous UAVs.
