A growing trend in the use of electric vehicles (EVs) around the world is the central driver pushing for enhanced EV charging infrastructure. This then calls for a shift to electric mobility, as Uganda’s transport sector contributes more than 10% of Uganda’s greenhouse gas emissions. This study aimed to identify Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) in central Kampala Division and evaluate their impact on the electricity grid. Specifically, a multi-criteria analysis in ArcGIS was employed to determine suitable locations for EVCS based on factors such as land cover, proximity to amenities, and transformers. These locations were then modelled in DigSILENT PowerFactory to investigate the effects of EV charging on the grid at varying penetration rates of 10%, 20% and 30%. The outcomes of this study support the Uganda National E-Mobility Strategy, which emphasizes the development of local EV infrastructure to meet the government’s targets of full electrification of public transit by 2030 and passenger vehicle sales by 2040. The findings of this study can be of significant value to policymakers and other players in the Ugandan automotive sector who are seeking to plan and efficiently develop sustainable charging facilities of EVs across Uganda’s growing urban centres for a more efficient and environmentally friendly transport system.
