Energy saving and labor saving have been generalized as one of the requirements for the car control system, and chopper controlled cars are being increasingly introduced in the world, mainly for subways. The Mexico Metro adopted chopper controlled cars in 1981 for the first time and has a plan to hold more than 1500 cars. To meet with the operating condition required in Mexico City such as large transportation capacity, high density operation and high land location from the sea level, freon cooling AVF (Automatic Variable Field) chopper control system was selected. These cars are operating successfully since April 1981, and the performances supported by many important techniques are reported in this paper.
