We developed an analytical model of the phase-locking mechanism for a diffraction-coupled array of semiconductor lasers. While the phase-locking range is found to be limited by nonuniformities between the individual lasers, this range can be expanded by increasing the gain-index coupling. Extensive computer simulations confirm these predictions.
