This paper is mainly focused on the feasibility of replacing the squirrel-cage rotor with the flux-barrier reluctance rotor for refrigeration compressors to achieve higher efficiency. Initially, given a certain stator from an applied IM, the design and optimization of the flux-barrier reluctance rotor are carried out considering the influence of different pole-pair numbers and flux-barrier numbers on electromagnetic performance. Then, two methods, including adopting the unequal turn winding and employing the Ferrite-Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machine (FA-SynRM), are proposed to reduce the voltage caused by the low power factor of the Synchronous Reluctance Machine (SynRM). Meanwhile, the mechanical stress optimization is performed for the high-speed operating condition. Finally, the electromagnetic performance of the SynRM and the FA-SynRM are analyzed and compared, whose outcomes demonstrating that adopting the SynRM rotor brings a much more significant efficiency increase.
