Micro Air Vehicle Link (MAVLink) protocol is designed for moderate data rate line-of-sight radio link for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) communication within limited range. This work aims to enhance the range of UAV through satellite communication, which calls for customization of MAVLink protocol for low data rate Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) link. Using proposed custom MAVLink protocol, the required data rate reduced by 89%. This protocol provides more flexibility and control compared to the heritage MAVLink's High Latency micro-service protocol as it supports Command Protocol, Mission Protocol and Parameter Protocol also along with telemetry information. The present work lays the groundwork for further developments to have telemetry and control of UAV Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) using low data rate satellite communication link.
