Engineering test trials have begun at O'Hare International Airport for the purpose of investigating the application of differential GPS (Global Positioning System) technology to airport surface surveillance. A ground differential reference station and a data-link transmitter/receiver were installed. Several airport vehicles and airline aircraft were fitted with GPS receivers, data-link radios, and map display units. Ground control displays were installed. These trials are ongoing. Differential GPS is being used to show how drivers and pilots can navigate on the airport surface, and how controllers can monitor the locations of aircraft and vehicles. The results to date of these trials are presented.<>
