Road accidents have negatively affected the socio-economic wellbeing of developing countries resulting in deaths, loss of limbs, disabilities, and destruction of properties for motorists, passengers, and passersby. The impact of road accidents affects the individual, family, and the society at large. Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria has experienced several occurrences of such accidents. This paper aims to develop a mobile application for determining a safer route between origin and destination, provide precise data about the occurrence of accidents to the appropriate authority, to analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of Road Traffic accidents (RTAs) and the extent to which motor vehicle drivers contribute to accident on the roadway in Abuja. To achieve these objectives, the paper developed a mobile application to analyze the spatial pattern of road traffic accidents, examined its temporal variation, characterize road traffic accidents as well as assess the nature of roadway at the city's black spots. The application performed hotspot analysis on a macrolevel to identify the black spots in the study area, conducted statistical analysis to map out the causes of accidents and identified most influential factors leading to accidents in Abuja using the accident dataset generated from the reported accidents. This Study found human factor to be the highest contributing factor at macro level and dangerous driving at micro level, with value of 50.5% and 21% respectively. Also, the decline in fatality and injury was largely explained by the strict enforcement of the regulations on compulsory usage of sit belts coupled with other penetrative awareness campaign by FRSC.
