This article presents a simplified three-pillar framework for assessing sustainability for hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles in India and identifies that large-scale commercial adoption is a key enabler of sustainability. The barriers for large scale adoption are identified, listed and a survey is conducted to gather responses on 10 concern areas namely awareness, policy, range, safety, reliability, infrastructure, cost, waiting time, social status and resale potential with an objective function of adoption. Whilst based on raw survey data, Safety emerged as key concern area, followed by Reliability and Infrastructure, a thorough mathematical modelling and analysis using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) indicated that interactive effects between the constructs are non-negligible and based on that infrastructure is a key influencing factor on adoption followed by cost. The survey also indicates an emerging trend towards adoption without the need for ownership through rental or lease service.
